Photography is one of the best ways for me to stay connected to my mother. When she was alive, she was a hobbyist photographer and had been since her college days. I used to carry her Minolta film camera around for her as a young boy once I was old enough to be trusted with not dropping it. For years I would ask if I could carry it and she would say no. I found great joy in this responsibility once i was of age to be counted on to not drop it. It excited me in ways similar to how kids get excited about toys, balls, bubbles, water balloons, go carts, video games, water slides, bmx bikes, skateboards, etc.. It made me feel like a young man though I was still a boy. When I hold a camera now, any camera, I am holding my mother in my hands and Im holding on to the feeling of that that old Minolta. This is more than taking pictures for me. This is inheritance. This is gifts passed down from mother to son. This is pride. This is celebrating my ancestors. — DMS
