Physical features and traits: Pit bulls have short hair, wide, powerful chest and head, powerful jaws (they dont lock - no dogs jaws do) and have muscular bodies. Most range from 35 to 65 lbs and stand between 12 to 17 inches high. They have wonderful stamina and are very good at a variety of activities and competitions such as ball, agility, weight-pulling, disc and competitive obedience. Pit bulls require a lot of attention and training. As with most dogs - if they are bored, they are going to be chewing up your favorite shoes. Pit bulls enjoy outdoor activities that are physically challenging as well as ones that are more challenging to the mind. Such as - find the treat puzzles. Pit bulls are used in a number of ways that help others. They were nicknamed nursemaids dogs because they were so good with children. They are used as registered service and therapy dogs, like Lucian Kilroy. they are used to help our soldiers that come home with PTSD get a more normal lifestyle. Pit bulls are used in search and rescue - 3 pit bulls from Sacremento, Ca (Tahoe, Cheyenne and Dakota) were used to help locate and rescue people in the World Trade Center disaster.They are used in US customs to detect narcotics and explosives, These dogs are loyal, loving family members to those of us who are lucky enough to be in their company. The biggest problem I have ever had is my 95 lb, bully thinks he is a lap dog and he hogs the blankets in the winter.
