Physicians, like all people, are not immune to mental disorders - TopicsExpress

Physicians, like all people, are not immune to mental disorders and/or marital breakdown. They are human. Professional care-givers (physicians, therapists, pastors etc) are less likely to ask for help because of their perceived societal positions. In addition, many professional care-givers are disillusioned because care-giving is been driven by $$$ and not compassion. In an interesting academic article from Australia the question was asked why it is that physicians have lost their compassion (“Can compassion survive the 21st century?” The Medical Journal of Australia Mabel Chew, Ruth M Armstrong and Martin B Van Der Weyden MJA 2003; 179 (11/12): 569-570). Doctors resigning and demoralized by forces ranging from heavy workloads to indemnity woes . . . A society conditioned to instant gratification, soaring expectations of modern medicine and technology, often fueled by media hype and increasingly cynical about doctors’ true priorities. The article asks why it is that compassion is eroding ... Australia is a lucky country that’s materially better off than ever before, but has become a society that is “neglecting the most vulnerable people in our society — the aged, the frail, the sick, the disadvantaged, the bewildered” (we can add the mentally ill). The article poses the question: Is compassion in its death throes two millennia after one man in Jerusalem advocated loving others as oneself? The attached article asks What can we do? Restore compassion to care-giving!.
