Picks and musings for 022314 by hsw 17 tracks 154 races Like the recent Tom Cruise flick where he stars as superhuman Jack Reacher -the Fountain of Youths came up as much adieu about nothing- I’ve yet to view the Risen Star in the sportsman’s paradise of Louisiana but unlike the “Jack Reacher” flick where the District Attorney’s daughter set new standards in the voluptuous department - it is doubtful that Saturday’s “prep” winners will gain as much as a 2nd look- but 1st a look at their (1st and 2nd) recent generations may clear up some fog- Wildcat Red, knocked off highly regarded Top Billing, and Commissioner, the latter my hapless selection for the FOY- and the chart of the 400K race notes that Wildcat Red, prevailed by a head over General A-Rod, a son of Roman Ruler- in the Bayous it was Intense Holiday, defeating Albano, in a close race as well- Intense Holiday, is a family 5-J item while Albano, is a “A1” member, with big heart Mahmoud, sitting in his 5th remove as sire of 4th dam Silver Fog- I doubt either one will exit 2014 as a classic winner unless they change addresses and move to Luxemburg- as for my utterly worthless pick Vigorish, #4 he is rounding the clubhouse turn and should finish by mid-July- but dig it man his “1st four dams are grade one winners!!- maybe his pedigree will kick in when the English Channel dark bay turn six! But with 4 G1 broodmares holding up his bottom line I wouldn’t want to be too hasty with Vigorish- The FOY winner is a son of D’Wildcat, which should make Florida thoroughbred interests happy, and Wildcat Red, represents the fantastic family 9-F……they are the leading platoon of broodmares in the world in my opine- the broodmare sire array for Wildcat Red is >Miners Mark, a son of Personal Ensign>Flying Paster, the stalwart son of Gummo>Grey Dawn, the only hoss to finish in front of Sea-Bird, I hope>What Luck, a very jet black like son of Bold Ruler, What Luck, was bred in the purple as well, and his progeny no matter how cold it got in Long Island, always sweated profusely- he had 20 chefs in his 1st house (speed) so I wouldn’t bet my home on him if he should find his way to Kentucky in May- as for General A-Rod, he comes down the pike from he famed family of Majestic Prince, more or less, and he may prove peskier than- Wildcat Red & Intense Holiday, or Albano- all in all horse folks with a good 3yo filly should not be shy about testing the 2014 triple crown waters- but none of the big boys have come out to play yet? Or have they?? Blood-Horse Magazine, had Top Billing, rated atop its most recent poll and he could not get up the mustard to knockoff Wildcat Red- but Top Billing has an all-star pedigree and stems from family 1-N of Chelandry, my favorite strand of race horses- (Forty Niner, Swale?) - he’ll get another chance to right his wagon- if he came out of his prep in good order. Whatever the case may be the winning connections no doubt are ecstatic and who wouldn’t be?! Whatever poppycock comes out of anyone’s pen should never dampen the execratory spirit of having a horse making hay on the road to the classics of 2014.
