Piedmont Blues and Folk-Blues guitarist Josh White died on this day in 1969 in Manhassett, NY at age 55. Josh White played a huge role in introducing Black folk, Blues and spirituals to white America and the world. White was the first Black artist to give a command performance at the White House and the first to have a million-selling record. (One Meatball in 1944) After enduring years of racism and segregation, White was again ostracized during the hysteria of the McCarthy communist trials. He was an extraordiarily gifted guitarist and was an immense influence on the Folk-Blues revival of the 60s. His House of The Rising Sun and In My Time of Dying was covered by Bob Dylan, and his entire repetoire has been covered by many folk and Blues musicans.. Whites son, Josh White Jr, continues his fathers legacy of fine acoustic music and social activism.
