Pigeon Slap Musics songs of the year #2 Tobias Jesso Jr.- True Love As ever, music is a collaborative effort between the present and the past, between the contemporary and nostalgia. Arcade Fire and Daft Punk tried to ram this down our throats last year with their look were like the 80s but were hip and modern schtick but it grew tiresome. By contrast one of 2014s emergent talents Tobias Jesso Jr. (another Canadian on the list) subtly combines the sweet and solemn melodies and rhythms of the likes of Paul Simon and Randy Newman with world wearied and mature lyricism befitting this midway point in the decade. Only having a handful of tracks to his name so far with an album Goon being released on Matador Records in March, True Love is a song against the grain of overly polished radio pop and serves as a perfect introduction to this incredibly talented songwriter. The instrumentation is nothing flashy and nor is the Jessos vocal performance but this song has something in droves that is sorely missed out in the vast majority of music. This song has heart. I had the privilege of being invited to Tobias first ever live performance. It was in a living room in a Hackney flat. I wasnt cool enough to be there.
