Place of employment for JOCV-OB and OG 18 December 2014 Original article on Results Japan official blog: resultsjp.sblo.jp/article/107090972.html I visited Secretariat of Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) to enquire the places of employment for JOCV OB and OG. In 2013, there were 2,500 job offers from different organizations and companies for 1,500 JOCV OB and OG and therefore, the valid job vacancy rate is 1.67. The MHLW reported that the valid job vacancy rate was 1.03-1.05 in 2013, so it seems that JOCV OG and OB are in better place to find a job after their assignment. The only thing we need to consider is that the MHLW data is collected from Hallo Work (public job agency) all over Japan. Means, only the job offers and job applicants in Hallo Work are counted. So, we cannot say which is in better place from those data. We never know the contents of the job offers from the data either. I sometimes hear that JOCV OB and OG struggle to find their job after the assignment. Based on ‘Crossroad’ a JICA’s magazine, 60%, 20%, less than 1% and 7% of JOCV OB and OG were employed in new workplace, returned to their original workplace, went further studies and got a part-time job respectively, could not find big problems. I personally think JICA needs to carry out the detailed research on the JOCVs’ place of employment after their assignment as the JOCVs use the public fund for their activities.
