Plan Ahead! We makes plans for many aspects of our lives. We look forward, we decide where we are headed, we make choices about what we will do and where we will go and how we will get there. There are some plans which we might want to avoid though, for many reasons. Many people do not have a will. It may seem macabre or difficult or not necessary (“I am healthy aren’t I? Plenty of time for that ‘later’?”). Yet life is fragile and can be challenged suddenly. A will is an important document which provides security and care for those left behind as well as reflecting the priorities and blessings which have been part of our lives. I always encourage couples preparing for marriage to make a will (and if a will exists they need to make a new one because marriage makes any previous will null and void). A part of that careful consideration for the inevitable end to our physical lives is to think carefully and prayerfully about our funeral arrangements. Christians believe that our life is not confined to this physical life, and so we are able to face physical death with less fear. Many of us belong to families in which those who will make arrangements for our funerals are not members of the church, or may not understand the depth of our faith and trust in God. It is helpful for them to know how we will want to be remembered and cherished and the aspects of our faith which we would like have included in a funeral. Forms have been prepared (and we began distributing them on Ash Wednesday) inviting each of us to ‘plan our funeral’. Please let us know if you would like a copy of this form - for use in connection with this Parish or for your own use. Let this be part of your Lenten Journey—to consider this preparation.
