Plan, Provide and Train to keep workers safe from fall hazards We’re in business to provide our clients easy ways to track labor costs, and help them be more productive and profitable. But they can’t do any of that if they have serious safety incidents. Falling–from ladders, chairs, desks, roofs, scaffolding, etc.– is one of the most common and most dangerous causes of workplace injury in America. In the construction world, falls are the leading cause of death, according to OSHA. Out of almost 700 construction-related fatalities in the US last year, nearly 300 were caused by falls. That’s about 1 death across the country every workday, Monday thru Friday (294 out of 796 total construction fatalities). All from people falling off things, and all of them preventable. OSHA has a Fall Prevention Campaign complete with media materials and training programs that’s worth checking out. It advises three basic steps for all projects: PLAN ahead to get the job done safely. When working from heights, employers must plan so the job is done safely. Decide how the job will be done, what tasks will be involved, and what safety equipment is needed. PROVIDE the right equipment. Workers who are six feet or more above lower levels are at risk. Employers must provide fall protection and the right equipment. Regularly inspect all fall protection equipment to ensure it’s still in good condition. TRAIN everyone to use the equipment safely. Employers must train workers in hazard recognition and in the care and safe use of equipment they’ll be using on the job. OSHA has provided materials and resources that employers can use to train on safe practices.
