Plastic bag recycling Plastic bags cannot be recycled in your blue bin but that does not mean they have to end up in your grey bin. It’s better to avoid plastic bags when you can, but this is not always possible. For your inevitable stash of plastic bags, most supermarkets offer a plastic bag recycling point in-store. These containers often not only accept carrier bags, but other types of plastic film as long as it’s free from contamination: • Carrier bags • Bread bags (shake the crumbs out) • Plastic wrapping from magazines and direct mail (without address stickers) • Frozen vegetable bags • Plastic from around toilet paper and paper towel rolls • Dry cleaning bags • Plastic air cushions used for packing • Thin bags used in supermarkets for fruit or vegetables (shaken out) Do not use these containers for • Cereal packet inners • Crisp packets or sweet wrappers • Compostable bags • Greeting card wrappers (as these are made from cellophane) • Pet food pouches Why not look out for facilities in your local supermarket the next time you visit? They are normally located by the main entrance.
