Plateau to sack 11,000 unqualified teachers- Governor Jang. 7, 000 teachers in the state are not qualified. The Plateau State governor, Jonah Jang has said that 11000 teachers in the state would soon be sacked for not having the necessary teaching qualifications required by the state. The governor stated this on Friday in Jos, during an interaction with journalists at the Government Lodge, Jishe, as part of his midterm report presentation. “I have made up my mind that the 11,000 unqualified teachers teaching in our schools who have failed to meet up standards required for teachers will be shown the way out. All our teachers must be trained in the right institutions to impact in our children the needed and desired knowledge,” he said. According to the governor, his administration met an almost debilitating rot in the education sector. He said that most teachers in elementary public schools are not qualified to teach. “7000 teachers, both in primary and secondary schools, do not have the required certificates. They were given the opportunity to amend this but till date only a few have met the standard. 4000 of them had no business with the teaching profession to begin with but they were in the classroom.” The governor did not state how the sack would help the 750,000 children who are out of school in the state. The Chairperson of the state Universal Basic Education Board in Plateau, Lyop Mang, had said in May that 750, 000 children, one in three children, are out of school in the state. Commenting on alleged ghost workers recently uncovered in the state following a verification exercise, Mr. Jang said the exercise was ongoing; therefore, the authentication list is yet to be made public. He noted that some persons were illegally collecting government funds in the name of salaries. “When I assumed office in 2007, we were paying salaries to 22, 000 workers. We conducted a verification exercise and the number dropped to 17, 000. Later, last year, we conducted a biometric verification exercise for civil servants, printed 17, 000 forms but only 15, 000 were collected by workers. Out of this number, 11, 000 forms have been screened and returned. The exercise is about ending and we are yet to see the remaining 4,000 workers. If they have decided to leave on their own, we don’t know; we cannot conclude until the final report is presented to us. But as its now, we are paying salaries to 11,000 workers.” Mr. Jang appealed to journalists to embark on Developmental Journalism as a means of strengthening democratic ideals. “Let’s promote those things that bind and build us as a people and nation. The key still remains developmental journalism,” he said. He pledged that his administration will not abandon any projects. “We will continue to work for our people to the end of the tenure. We will not relent in completing on- going projects we initiated including those we inherited as well as giving due attention to the welfare of our people and the civil service which is undergoing reforms. I dare to say we are in a hurry!.
