Playing The Howard Theater in Washington DC tonight. Its a really nice theater on T Street next to the Howard University campus. You can see in the attached pics a nice sculpture of Duke Ellington that is the centerpiece of the square in front of the theater. I wouldve liked to have seen my friend, Russell Sledge, while here. But sadly, he just recently passed away due to a respiratory related illness from what I gather. RIP Russell, Im sure that DC misses you as well all that knew you do. DC is a wild place. From my History Channel late night watching and tours of our Nations Capitol, the city and many of its governing buildings were designed in such a way to intimidate and confuse visiting foreign heads if state. Very different from the practical grid layout of NYC - at least until the Village. But, that was at least in my opinion, designed by the natural shape of the isle of Manhattan, and not by conscious design. Also equally confusing is the populous. You have the the most powerful man in the world living in the heart of a city with many poverty stricken areas. It seems to me, regardless of political affiliation, that on one hand, DC is a city of people that want to change the world - some for altruistic intentions and others much more so promoting their own lobbied agendas. But, on the other hand in both cases, primarily not seeing the real world problems the that plague so many in their own city. One thing that I do find intimidating is the heat today. Its mid May and its almost 90 degrees here. The debate over climate change rages on a few miles from here Im sure, but they should schedule those arguments on days like today and they should be held on the Capitol Hill steps at noon. Opinions might change. And, to be fair, the same in January. But, theres no denying it in my book. Its really hot out here, and its May.
