Playing syncopation on the drums is very key to my approach in groove drumming. Its my way of playing the kit musically. Harvey Mason is a big influence for me in this area. So, the idea in syncopated drumming, is to have a constant flow, incorporating the toms, cymbals, cowbell, etc. with the hat/snare patterns & bass lines WITHOUT interruption of the groove itself. When done tastefully and with proper placement, I may use syncopated playing in the MIDDLE of a measure...and definitely at the END of it, before coming back on the ONE. Aint Nobody is a composition that lives and breathes syncopation!!! Whenever I cover this track, my approach is to play my grooves and syncopated fills off of the BASS LINE. I must remain disciplined and NEVER stray from that formula...or the house of cards will tumble and the groove will fall apart.
