NANDA RAJ-JAT Nanda daughter of noble Himavat And Lord Shiva’s supreme consort, Still bidden sacred see-off In exodus, dowry and escort. After wedlock with Bholenath She reached Kailash as a bride, But was grieved to behold low Ascetic dwelling at hill side. Oft she cursed her parents for Espousal with ash smeared saint, To be in blanket & grind the hemp In the abode desolate, distant. Venged drought in natal zone Insects sprang in the food grain, Milch cattle ceased milk yield Harvest mourned for vanished rain. Wretched Mom Naina surmised wrath Sent Heet, Binsar to her home Distress dispersed as Nanda came And she wailed in mother’s zone. Back she went to in-laws nest Escorted by kith & kin, Gold & grain as dowry bid Ornate, elegant in palanquin. Today the scene is regraced With rituals of royal pilgrimage, Rhythm is new but faith is same Flowing from age to age. After the every twelve years A four horned ram takes birth, Purohit of Nauti & Kansuwa Kunwar Seek the blessing in sheer mirth. Bare feet trekkers with Doli, Nishan Folk drum beat and dappled flags, Blindly follow the sacred ram Love in heart and jewel in bags. Emotional adieu to out wed daughter Tutelary deity’s obeisance devotion, Religious faith and adventure thrill Maternal kinship, filial affection. Three weeks trek of woods & hill Sylvan meadows and placid lake, Together ride in bygone faith For the celestial daughter’s sake. At Homkund idol, parasol Submerged in tranquil waters, And become the divine oblation For the multitude of trekkers. Pilgrims stunned mute with tears Gaze with obeisance, parting prone, Ram carrying the exaltation Vanishes in mystery unknown. By : Sadar Kaintura
