Please VOTE TODAY, YES for SPLOST! Do it for us!! We have no voice but YOURS! A New Animal Shelter is on the ballot! Thank you! Our current Spalding County Animal Shelter and Control facility is currently 42 yrs old and lacks modern infrastructure and sanitation provision to todays standards. It is small, outdated, inefficient and poorly designed for sanitation. The open trough sanitation system is a thing of the past and highly frowned upon because of cross contamination among animals. This old system would be replaced with more modern waste removal, water flushing disinfectants and drainage systems. The new proposed facility will almost double in size at 9000 Sq ft. The facility will be able to house more animals with larger indoor-outdoor canine kennels, smaller animal kennels and free roaming areas for felines. This will help with the stray free roaming animal population. Canines and felines will also be housed in separate (wings) buildings. Natural lighting via windows,a newer more progressive energy efficient heating and air system will be more cost effective. There will be intake and true quarantine areas separate from healthy and adoptable animals. An adoption room so that you and your family will have a safe space to bond with the animal of choice. A separate procedures room for humane euthanasia and would double as a spay, neuter, vetting room in the future. The facility will be housed at the current location Justice Blvd or possibly Carver Rd, property is current County owned property. We feel that through continued cooperation from inmate labor, staff, rescue partners, volunteers, with more energy efficient materials that the current staffing will meet the facilities needs. None of this will be truly known until up and operational. Our current operating budget is $303,000 and the dept. plans to stay within the current County operating budget. The drawing you see is of Chatham County Ga and it models what our committee has looked into for our new animal control facility, but on a much smaller scale. Of course if the SPLOST is passed a true architecture rendering will be made. We want to lead the community in displaying the worth of responsible pet ownership by making an investment in a proper facility with tools that will assist the community. Building a family friendly, inviting shelter will change the face of animal control from a place where unwanted animals are collected and euthanize, to a center and community resource for responsible pet ownership.
