Please help. We need advice, nothing more. I am glad I found this page and Id like to thank anyone who offers their help in advance. Benson is a street dog from Mexico. We rescued him when he was a mere 5 weeks old. Now living in Canada, he is generally doing well. Our problem is, that when he turned 1 year old, he began to develop skin issues. After an exausting series of trial and errors, We have eliminated allergies as a source of the problem. The cycle of Bensons skin issue is as follows... Red pimples develop, turning into dry, red sores that cause the hair to fall out. Excessive scratching and inflammation occurs. This is not isolated to a specific area, rather, over the entire body. Bensons mother was a beagle, and father unknown, but Ive gotten into the habit of explaining his horrible appearance with that his father was a Mexican hairless dog. ;) For the first three years, Canadian vets put him on Prednisone, which merely band aided the issue and solved nothing except kept his scratching to a minimum. Despite my willingness to pay the hefty vet costs, Canadian vets did very little to discover the real root of the problem. Little did I realize at the time, that the Prednisone also was causing serious immune system problems. After eliminating allergies, we tried several recommended methods such as medicated shampoos, derma parasite remedies and medications. Regular bathes and skin conditioners we also used to no end solution. Benson hated his own skin, and I hated seeing him so uncomfortable. Extremely frustrated I took him to a vet in Mexico , and we finally came to the conclusion that it was Demodectic Mange, or Red Mange stemming from a dysfunctional immune system. Why Canadian vets didnt entertain this is beyond me, because it only seemed like a logical path to consider. Skin scrapings were taken in Canada and showed nothing concerning, according to the vets. The Mexican vet, sent a skin scraping to a lab in Guadalajara and still nothing came back as problematic. We began treatment when Benson was at his worst - inflammation, pimples, red spots, itchiness, loss of hair, dry skin. etc. The TREATMENT consisted of, at first, a weekly dose of ZYLEXIS, a paraimmune booster for 4 weeks, combined with 1 bath per week using a non medicated shampoo. Ivermectin (5mg) daily for 1 week, then 5 MG every 2-3 days there after. Within 2 weeks Benson cleared up and within 4 weeks, hair was fully growing back and he recovered completely. MAINTENANCE then became a single dose of Zylexis every 3-4 MONTHS, followed by an application of Ivermectin CREAM when necessary. With the Zylexis injection, Ivermectin tablets were NO LONGER necessary. Now, we are back in Canada and my Canadian vet claims Zylexis is not available nor is IVERMECTIN CREAM , and does NOT seem interested in researching it for me. Today, Benson is back to being scratchy and problematic and I am desperate to solve this for him. If anyone can offer advice or needs more info on Bensons condition, Id be more than grateful and happy to assist. Thank you again to everyone who reads this.
