Please help me out. Can you be a honorary Professor without any history of playing academic or research roles even just part-time? I thought Professorship is a carrier rank and not a qualification like a PhD. For instance, can you be a honorary driver or a nurse without working as one at some point? Mind you Professors are teachers of the highest rank. Who have been teaching at a higher learning institution for a certain minimum number of hours and even publish substantially.... Can a university award such a honour to a person outside the academics and research?... My brief internet search confirms my concerns.... From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Honorary titles in academia may be conferred on persons in recognition of contributions by a non-employee or by an employee beyond regular duties. This practice primarily exists in the UK and some universities and colleges in the United States, Australia and Canada. Examples of such titles are Honorary Professor,[1] Honorary Fellow, Honorary Senior Research Fellow, Honorary Reader, Honorary Lecturer (normally applies to non-teaching staff, who give occasional lectures),[2] Visiting Fellow (normally applies to students carrying out further studies and research programmes),[3] Industrial Fellow.[4] Also various professional bodies, such as the Royal Institute of British Architects also have honorary fellowships.[5] In Germany, visiting lecturers and private lecturers can be conferred the titles of Honorarprofessor or Außerplanmäßiger Professor respectively after several semesters of successful teaching. Honorary title sometimes permit non-employees to enjoy the privileges available to regular staff members, such as access to facilities and libraries, parking permit. Please also visit: cardiff.ac.uk/humrs/staffinfo/policyprocedures/honorarytitlespolicy.html and read what is found below: 2.16 Honorary Professor: The title is awarded to an individual who is making a substantial commitment of a non-transient kind to the teaching and research activities of the University at a level deemed to be worthy of this title when assessed against the criteria for promotions to personal chairs and following the consideration of two external assessors. Persons nominated could be senior academics at other Universities (that is to say those already in possession of a Chair), Professors who have left the University to undertake work of an essentially academic nature outside of Higher Education, or recent retirees who are not eligible for conferment of the title of Professor Emeritus by virtue of their continued contribution to the University’s activities.
