Please help support us tonight at 6pm at City Hall. We need our residents and downtown shoppers to help make the City Council see that theyre killing us by wanting to close the streets for 6 months next summer. The vote to carry on with Phase 3 of the construction project is tonight at 6pm at City Hall. The vote is ultimately decided by the City Council, 4 yes votes means a go ahead with the plans. Each merchant does get a vote but ultimately it comes down to four City Council members giving the YAY. Some merchants downtown feel like the councils minds are made up but I feel like the more people that are there to support the merchants we could really make a difference. If you are not afraid to speak up for us I would definitely invite you to come and speak to the council. This does definitely involve residents as well. I really truly believe that this project does not need to take six months. The City passed up on a half million dollar grant so that we could award last summers construction project to Burkhardt Construction. We all begged for that because they offered such great results in a TIMELY fashion. They are a fabulous company and obviously from prior years constructions projects downtown they do a beautiful job making our downtown even more attractive. My main concern, in a nutshell, is asking our residents to come and shop downtown 3 summers in a row to keep us afloat. We shouldnt have to beg for your support 3 years in a row because these projects cant be completed more quickly. It seems to me that during the summer when it is light outside for 12 hours each day, that Burkhardt could work two crews and complete this project more quickly. There are a ton of ifs with these plans. As you, and most of my friends(customers), know this business is my life. People say not to work your life away but I love opening my store everyday and getting to talk with all the people(okay MOST of the people), that come in here everyday. Ive had the pleasure of getting to know so many people that come into my store. Ive watched families grow, gone through losses, weddings, retirements, new jobs, all of you are like my extended family. To even think about my business failing because of a construction project brings tears to my eyes. It might be one thing if I didnt work so hard to make my store successful. To possibly allow this project to put me under instead of just putting it off for one year to allow our customers to get used to coming back downtown year round would really be a sad state. Nothing is lost by waiting one year to do this. On the other hand if they go ahead with this project and great stores, that hold great events and bring lots of people downtown to shop, eat and relax, go out of business theyll be sorry. And unfortunately itll be too late. Keep your fingers crossed for a vote in our favor tonight. I wont go down without a fight, thats for sure. Please come out and support us-strength in numbers!
