Please help us in this cause... Many times the individuals that serve the community as a volunteer firefighter are also the ones willing to step up and serve also as an elected official. In 2012 a law was passed (IC 3-5-9) by the Indiana General Assembly that took away our rights to be a member of a fire department in the same community in which we choose to and are elected to serve in “certain” elected offices in that same community. It has forced many to choose either their fire department or their elected office. Please take just a minute to click on the link below to visit the Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association petition requesting we be allowed to continue to serve as a firefighter even if we choose to serve in (any) elected office, in the same community. We are asking you to sign this petition and in the comments section of the petition site, please add your zip code so we know those who have signed in Indiana, as well as those outside Indiana. Then we hope you will continue to help us by sharing this post. Everyone can sign this petition; it is NOT just for fire service members. All we are asking is to be treated, equally, fairly, and have the same rights as any other elected official without restrictions.
