Please join me tonight (Thurs. July 17, 2014) between 7:30pmET and 9:00 for another largely vapid episode of La Villa Strangiato, only on CHUO 89.1 FM in Ottawa or via livestream at chuo.fm! On this weeks program, a few classics, a couple of rarities, and some pretty stellar new stuff. Things get underway with a light and refreshing instrumental off the 1976 Genesis LP Wind and Wuthering--the last record of their to feature the great Steve Hackett on guitar. Music in the first half hour by one of the great group Quebecois groups--and certainly the greatest hailing from the Gatineau region: Connivence, with a track from their 1977 debut that brings to mind Picchio dal Pozzo, Kansas and Zappa. (Hopefully this one will be released on CD one day). Following immediately will be music by American guitarist David Torn, then French ensembles Tiemko (Musea Records) and ZAKARYA - TZADIK on (Tzadik Records). In our second half hour, well check out a great track off the debut CD from Torontos Midcoast, an up-and-coming instrumental jazz-rock (emphasis on the jazz and the rock) group from Toronto wholl be doing a gig at The Rainbow this Sunday. In case you were wondering, attendance for this show is mandatory. Tunes also coming at us from seasoned California composer and guitarist Jason Rubenstein, Torontos fantastic Druckfarben (whose new album is drawing lots of praise this summer), and the Chicago Underground Duo consisting of Rob Mazurek and Chad Taylor. For our Pioneers and Legends of British Fusion and Jazz Rock, Phil Collins returns to the drum stool in his other noteworthy 70s band Brand X. (His career certainly was a lot more interesting, I think, before the 80s hit). And finally, as part of our long song series, IQ hits us over the head with the 20-minute long Narrow Margin from their 90s minor classic, Subterranea. Thanks for tuning in....I care if you listen!
