Please join us on Tuesday July 1, 2014 from 6-8:00 pm at New York Buddhist Church for a book talk and interview with Rabbi David Greenstein This is the first event in the Intangible Girth series, sponsored by Pheeroan akLaff, Artistic Director of Seed Artists.org. These events will offer the opportunity to add a human touch to the scholarly work of multi-talented artists. We are excited to begin our series with an artist welding several qualities of service and callings. David has lectured widely in academic settings, but on Shabbat mornings, he is less likely to give a conventional sermon than to engage congregants in a running, free-form conversation about the meanings embedded in that day’s texts and prayers – before enticing toddlers to join him in Ein Kelohenu with the lure of a basket of candy hidden on the bimah. For years before his ordination, Rabbi Greenstein was an exhibiting artist, painting during the week and serving as a cantor on Shabbat. Tuesday we will share his findings on practical use of ancient text, and the subjects surrounding his new book on the Walking Stories of the Zohar ! His activities and titles include: * BA in Philosophy and MA in Talmud from Yeshiva University * MFA in Painting from Queens College * Ph.D. in Medieval Jewish Thought from New York University * Art instructor at Queens College, the 92nd Street Y, and various schools and colleges in Israel. * Lecturer on art, Judaism and Kabbalah at such venues as University of Connecticut, FIT, UJA/Federation NY and the Jewish Museum. The second event in the series will be held on July 15th and will feature reknowned jazz musician William Parker...more to follow! **About Pheeroan akLaff: Band leader, percussionist, improvisor, recording artist, and teacher who has traveled all the continents. He is a regular at leading international festivals and a dedicated teacher and workshop leader. **About seedartists.org Seed Artists is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in Montclair, New Jersey. Founded in Brooklyn by renowned drummer, composer and educator Pheeroan akLaff in 2005, Seed used creative music to bridge gaps between generations and cultures, promote community involvement and expand musical education among schoolchildren. In its first few years, Mr. akLaff produced musical performances in nursing homes, hospices and community gardens; mentored middle-school music students; mentored a high-school chorus and directed its performance at a retirement home; and sponsored a workshop at a women’s shelter in Brooklyn. It was a true grassroots, DIY project. Intimate performances, hands-on teaching, and heartfelt interactions between children and their elders.
