To: Rick Snyder, Governor of Michigan Governor Snyder: We urge you to demand that our federal government provide fail-safe protection of the Great Lakes and their tributaries—the largest freshwater system on Earth—from toxic oil pipeline spills. To accomplish this, federal authorities must: First, require Enbridge Energy to immediately remove and replace its aging, 60-year-old Mackinac Line (Line 5), a disaster waiting to happen in the Straits of Mackinac, with the safest, most up-to-date pipeline technology available, including aggressive monitoring and shutoff controls; fully fund proper spill remediation measures; and provide publicly transparent permitting information; and Second, permanently forbid all transport of tar sands oil (i.e., diluted bitumen or ‘dilbit’) by tankers or through the Mackinac Line or any other pipeline in close proximity to the Great Lakes or its tributaries, because submerged tar sands oil spills cannot be properly cleaned up. oilandwaterdontmix/
