Please review the link to a public service announcement from the Internet Crimes Complaint Center, Cyber-Related Scams Targeting Universities, Employees, and Students. We have experienced two of scams listed in the bulletin already: (1) spear fishing emails that pretend to be from the University requesting user name and password to employees HR personnel account resulting in diversion of direct deposit pay checks to perpetrators accounts; (2) Contacting students via job bulletin boards and offering administrative positions which involve processing counterfeit checks in the students personal bank account and the student transmitting funds via wire transfer before the banks discover the checks are bad. In a variation of (2), students have received checks for items they placed for sale on the internet (e.g. Craigslist) in which they are overpaid and asked to wire the excess back to the buyer via wire transfer. Guess what? The check turns out to be bad and the depositor student is on the hook for the amount to the bank who will immediately debit the account. NEVER provide usernames, passwords, or any personal identification information, such as social security numbers or bank account numbers, in response to any unsolicited email. Anytime you are asked to deposit a check into your personal account by a stranger and asked to return funds via wire transfer either as part of a job or because of an overpayment, dont do it and report it to the police.
