Please share: An Open Letter to the British people and the International Community, The Philippines has been devastated by one of the most catastrophic natural disaster in living memory. Thousands and thousands of our people - real people - have been affected by winds in excess of 380 kilometers per hour, followed by crushing tsunami (tidal waves). These events have ripped our communities apart, killing and injuring our parents, our siblings, even our children; our families and our friends. It is perhaps difficult - even with daily reports and photographs in the national and international Press - to appreciate the sheer scale of this tragedy. Put in perspective, the number of people left dying from just the direct impact of the storm would be no less a scale than 6 rush hour commuter Underground Tubes packed full of passengers colliding at over 200mph, or the equivalent of 10 jumbo jet falling apart in mid-air. The number of people who have lost their homes is readily (and accurately) compared to the destruction of the whole of London. If our nurses work tirelessly over here, it is impossible to imagine their dedication and the impact they are having over there. Working in tents and makeshift hospitals, they are dealing with the physical and psychological impact of the onslaught of the sea and air, with the highest standard of professionalism. Without their help, many more would have died and will die, from what has already come to pass - and what now follows - trying to cope with their world having been torn apart. Never forget how, in so many cases, these nurses too continue in spite of the loss of their own loved ones, and honor their duty and commitment to their vocation and to Humankind. Our hopes and prayers are with these heroes and heroines, and for those they treat and care for. We hope that you can join us in our support of our nurses and their families, their many thousands of patients, from hundreds of communities across the Philippines. Please give what you can, as our nurses do here for you. Our people live by your mercy; you are, at this time, our only hope. Sincerely, Michael Duque RN President Philippine Nurses Association of the United Kingdom (PNA UK) Registered UK Charity (2004) number 1112030
