Please share with your friends and family ... Police are reminding the community to be alert to scammers claiming to represent the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Recent reports to South Australia Police indicate that these con artists are at work again across the state – at times using aggressive tactics such as claiming a warrant has been issued for the arrest of the person contacted. In one recent case the caller demanded a sum of money in order to have the warrant dropped, and threated the victim with immediate arrest. Luckily the would-be victim refused to pay any money, obtained a phone number – which later proved to not be a valid number – and contacted both their accountant and police to report the matter. The ATO has a wide variety of information on its website about how to avoid being scammed and provides both an email address and phone contact for anyone who wishes to check on the legitimacy of any communication claiming to be from the office.
