Please take a minute to read this insightful post on the impact of social media and fundraising... via the ALS ice bucket challenge in particular. I was called out multiple times to do the challenge and opted to donate instead of accepting the bucket of ice. I am happy with my decision to donate, as I lost one of my biggest mentors and favorite teachers to ALS, and have 2 friends that are dealing with this debilitating condition right now. But, the points illustrated in this post from Mike are important for all of us to understand. You see, I believe that the because this challenge (ie marketing campaign) has been so successful, we are going to start seeing similar campaigns pop up in our newsfeed for all the other non-profit organizations out there as well. We have to keep in mind not to judge people on whether or not they participate in these other challenges. Imagine getting publicly challenged to contribute to 9 or 10 different challenges all at the same time. Will you take the time to learn about each one? Or will you get frustrated and stop donating all together. Its an interesting world we live in, and social media is impacting it in more ways than we know.
