Please take the time this week to support local musicians in need. There are several important benefit events happening in New Orleans, with the music community gathering together to support its own. Wed like to point out that one of these events is free and that those that charge admission are very affordable, especially when you consider the range of great talent involved. And one event is actually a blood drive. *** Tonight (February 4) a special benefit is being held at Cafe Istanbul from 7 to 11 pm, to raise money to help local musician Eric Hornsby, who in December lost his house in Pontchartrain Park to a fire. Performers include Jus Fa Nah as a house band, backing a number of New Orleans musicians. Admission is free, and money is being raised by selling food, drinks, and raffle tickets. wwoz.org/events/233478 *** Thursday night (February 6) there will be a huge all-star show and a silent auction at the House of Blues, to benefit soundman Gary Druilhet, who is facing major health problems. Performances include a special solo set by Dr John, plus Kermit Ruffins & the BBQ Swingers, Colin Lake, the Joe Krown Trio, John Papa Gros, the Tin Men, the Linda Wright Gospel Band, and John Lisi. General admission is only $25, and balcony admission is $50. houseofblues/tickets/eventdetail.php?eventid=86076 *** And on Sunday (February 9) a four-hour all-star benefit show will be held at d.b.a on Frenchmen Street on Sunday (February 9) from 2-6 pm, to raise money to help defray medical costs for musician Dennis Potter, who was recently assaulted and beaten in the French Quarter after a gig. Scheduled performers so far include Meschiya Lake & The Little Big Horns, John Boutte, the Washboard Chaz Blues Trio, Showarama, Tim Robertson, a group of musicians dubbed The Doug Potter All-Stars, and Miss Sophie Lee and Linnzi Zaorski. Admission is only $10. Commanders Palace, where Potter played a regular weekend brunch gig, is providing food. There will also be a fund-raising raffle for prizes donated by local businesses.
