Ploy to malign Narendra Modi hits a new low Letter to Obama a breach of our sovereignity In what is being seen as another ploy by the Congress, the letter addressed to President Obama and signed by sixty five members of the Parliament asking him not to grant a visa to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was recently made public. This was reportedly the third time the letter was being sent off to the White House, the first two instances being in November and December. Political leaders like Prakash Karat, Sanjeev Nayak and Ramalingam, amongst others have decried any knowledge of ever signing such a document while Rajya Sabha MP Mohammad Adeeb, the person behind the initiative claims that all the MPs were in the know. While this incident is not only deplorable as it seeks to malign the image of a constitutionally elected leader it also makes a mockery of our sovereign nature. It sadly shows that our political leaders’ psyche has failed to get over the days of the Raj where foreign intervention was required to solve every internal political tiff. Senior diplomat G Parthasarthy labelled it a sordid affair said he had never seen such a demeaning act ever occur in all his days in the Government. He goes on to add that it soils our national image and ‘a breach of all norms of foreign policy’. In the conversation with Kanchan Gupta on The View hour Mr Parthasarthy also points out that Mr. Modi has been given by a clean chit by the highest court of the land. While it remains to be known if it is indeed Congress’s idea of penning the letter, Meenakshi Lekhi senior SC advocate and national spokesperson for the BJP says she has no doubt that Congress is behind all of it and goes on to say that the letter is against the Constitutional fabric of the country. Highlighting the fact that many political leaders have distanced themselves from the issue while many have claimed that they signed it under the impression that it was written to address some human rights violation, Ms. Lekhi says that it seemed to her to be a case of forgery and impersonation and should be investigated by the police. Believing it to be a ploy to tarnish Narendra Modi’s image she says that from 2002-13 Gujarat has been riot free and this has just been a case of ‘flogging a dead horse’. nwrlive/2013/07/24/meenakshi-lekhi-on-letter-to-obama-controversy-1554.html That the Congress and other of their ilk have been baying for Narendra Modi’s blood after 2oo2 and refuse to relent even after the courts have held him as innocent is hardly a secret but the communal nature of the letter is hard to miss. Majority of the signatories of this infamous appeal to Obama are Muslim leaders and as Mr. Parthasarthy points out, dividing and polarising the electorate on communal lines does not bode very well for the future of the country. When will our leaders wake up to this fact?
