Poetry Interpretation: I Love You ONO The value of poetry to rhetoric is in its eliciting emotion. Poetry is not something you read, it is something you feel. What is not said is often more valued than what is said. Lyrics are a form of poetry, with measured cadence. “I Love You ONO” is a song by the Franco-Deutch band Steoro Total, from their My Melody album. It is a retitled version of “I Love You, Oh No!” by the Japanese new wave band the “Plastics”. It has been used in numerous commercial advertisements and lends itself well to a mercantilist jingle. On the surface it appears meaningless, fun and carefree. A deeper interpretation reveals a run-on-life, a rejection of process, and a feeling of oppression. It shows four seasons and a life journey. The first and second repeat four times, with a mid-poem stanza – I love you, ONO Diamond ring, CHA CHA Holiday sun, OPQ Planet earth presents you The first stanza makes use of ONO as either a hint towards its Japanese origins, by referencing Yoko Ono, or perhaps could be read as a Uno for One. As it sounds, “Oh No!” is an expression of surprise. Repeated through the poem CHA CHA, as in Cha-Cha-Cha; the Cha-Cha-Cha is a Cuban style of dance known for its steady beat and male lead. This could imply the poem is from a female point of view, but is more about the timing than anything else, signifying how control and power have been subsumed by the beat of life. “Planet earth presents you” is an arrival from the populous to the world, a birth. Big money, Big system, Big fame, Big brother The second stanza is a progression of business, society, celebrities, and government. Each is a layer of human-created control; a strong theme of person versus society. By being born to the world each of us must live within the confines of a larger ecosystem. Progressing through the poem is a Diamond Ring, Silver Fox, and 18 Gold – an obvious allegory of engagement, celebration, and marriage. It suggests the need to move into the next thing once done with the last. The line “Holiday sun, OPQ” is both about a point of relaxation and moving into a career (an OPQ is an Occupational Personality Questionnaire). The Silver Fox is the most valued fur and suggests wealth, as does a swimming pool. The Zap Zap by the swimming pool could either be the sound of the bug zapper, but with the materialistic theme suggests more about the fast disappearance of money and high expenses. A wedding march is followed by an almost perfunctory BANG BANG honeymoon. The overall progression of the poem can be interpreted as a cautionary tale of how perfection in life and career are predictably patterned and meaningless. The excitement is from the perpetual timing that leaves no room for reflection or self-identity. There is certainty throughout. Doubt only enters into the poem at its mid-point – No no no no I dont need it Perfect system I am fallin No no no no I dont need it Perfect system I am fallin It would be a mistake to interpret this doubt as middle age. It appears before a wedding. When people are faced with commitment, there is doubt. The perfect system has decided the fate, and the last plea for help is made. There is momentum in falling, but it is still downward, terminal, and a loss. The final two stanzas is the first moment where a person becomes subject. Up to this point the main stanza has had variation in materialism. It is solitary and unique in that the first half of each line forms the monologue “I love you; I need you; I want you.” The second half drones on with the same ONO, CHA CHA, and return of OPQ. “I Love You ONO” is more than materialism personified as song. While the repeating of no, no, no, no may sound like a rejection, it is one without action; time and system is all that matters. It is fitting how the poem is used in advertising - being plastic, commercial, and manipulated into a prearranged consumer habit. Big money, Big system, Big fame and Big brother are monolithic and the human element is just the mortar between these bricks. youtube/watch?v=Ev-yoZWAJhE
