Pohnpei Campus Faculty Attend Clean Energy Workshop At USP KOLONIA, Pohnpei (COM-FSM News, Feb. 17, 2014) — Two Pohnpei Campus faculty members attended a three week Vocational Training and Education for Clean Energy (VOCTEC) program at the University of South Pacific (USP) from January 20 – February 7, 2014. The program was held at USP’s Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment’s Training Center at Laucala campus, Suva, Fiji. A total of 14 participants from the FSM, including Cirilo Recana and Romino Victor from the College of Micronesia-FSM. Participating island nations included the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Samoa, Papua New Guinea and Palau who were trained as standalone Photovoltaic (solar) system trainers. The program is being implemented by the United States Agency for International Development (USAid) in partnership with Arizona State University under the facilitation of Bulent Bicer and USP’s School of Engineering and Physics. The purpose of the workshop was to help improve the sustainability of renewable energy investments and infrastructure by increasing the regional capacity of qualified technical trainers and technicians to install, operate, and troubleshoot off-grid solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. Upon completion of the training, participants will conduct technician training in their respective countries.
