Poisoning of Grass I can’t understand why it is that some people - TopicsExpress

Poisoning of Grass I can’t understand why it is that some people believe that poisoned and dead grass is more aesthetically appealing and healthier than green healthy grass. Look at the two photos below. I don’t know about you, but I much prefer seeing the green grass. In addition to poisoning the grass, whatever poison was used most likely contaminated the ground killing off insects and other animals in the top soil. On top of that, when it rains, the poison gets leached into the nearby gutter and makes its way into the sea, which in Vieux-Fort is no more than a stone’s throw away. In the sea, these poisons are absorbed and concentrated in the fish that our fishermen catch. We then pay good money to buy that fish which returns the poison that we initially applied to the grass, to our bodies. Then we spend lots of money seeing doctors for incurable ailments like cancer. We need to reconsider our rubbish practices and start thinking of what we are doing and why we are doing them. We are too much a society that does things because it’s written somewhere or sometime in the past or present, someone told us we should do it. We need to understand the full consequences of all our actions and adjust our behaviour accordingly. Note that the same rubbish is being practiced by our farmers with the consequence that the poisons make their way into our rivers. I’m really fed up with this nonsense. Protection of fish spawning grounds On a related issue, there’s a gutter in Vieux-Fort that runs in front of the Police Station extending beyond Uptown Liquor Store and terminating at the Builder’s Choice building. There it joins a mangrove swamp. On Saturday July 6th, 2013, a beautiful sunny day, I happened to be passing in that area when a plethora of motion in the gutter caught my attention. On closer inspection, I noticed that along its entire length, the gutter was overflowing with young fish. On mentioning to an employee in the area, it was remarked that an employee in another establishment that shares the gutter said ‘it’s a pity, they are all going to die’. That is heart breaking and it would be a crime to permit it to happen. WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?! Once again, many of us fail to take a holistic view of the situation. This gutter is connected to a mangrove swamp. It is known that fish use these swamps to spawn. The young fish, after hatching and spending some time in the swamp/gutter then find their way to the ocean, where they grow and are caught by our fishermen. We then once again, spend good money buying this fish from our fishermen. So when we contaminate this gutter with poisons and toxins, the fish return these poisons and toxins to our bodies and we all end up suffering for the irresponsible behaviour of a few. We need to protect this gutter and keep toxins from entering it. The same holds true for the Castries river. Anyone who has taken the time to look will know that there are lots of fish flourishing in that river. All you need do is look over the bridge especially near the Vieux-Fort bus stand. Of course, those of you who have given these points a little thought would realize that this is all the same world hunger and security of food supply issue that global politicians talk about all the time, it’s just on a local level. If we all target these issues on our own local scale, this would go a long way in solving a lot of our food and health related issues. Polluting of these vital waterways needs to be treated as a crime punishable by law since the consequent effect is tied strongly to the country’s well being and our health bill.
