Police accuse estate agent of N475,000 accommodation fraud A 38-year-old man, Toba Oyinloye, who allegedly defrauded accommodation seekers of N475, 000, has appeared before an Apapa Senior Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, on Wednesday. Oyinloye, a resident of No.4, Ali Street, Sari-Iganmu, Orile, Lagos, is standing trial on a three-count charge of stealing, conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence. The Prosecutor, Corporal Friday Inedu, said that the accused collected N150, 000 from Augustine Maduabuchi; N154, 000 from Nkereuwem Akpan and N171, 000 from Emmanuel Anigor, but failed to secure accommodations for any of them. Inedu put the total amount collected by the accused from the complainants at N475, 000. “The accused and others now at large, after collecting the money, disappeared, without providing accommodations for the victims,” he said. The prosecutor said that the accused committed the offences between March 5 and April 15, 2013 by 3.00 pm at his residence. “The complainants later reported the case to the police and the accused was arrested,” Inedu said. He added that the offences contravened Sections 285, 312 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Senior Magistrate, Mr. Adeyemi Amos, granted the accused bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum. Amos ordered that the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government, as part of the bail conditions. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 312 of the Criminal Law stipulates 15 years imprisonment for obtaining money under false pretences. The case was adjourned till November 14, 2013 for further hearing.
