DECATUR — Nearly two years have passed since 17-year-old Caleb Witty was shot to death while walking home from Decatur Celebration with his sister, and it’s been almost 19 years since Sherry Lewis, a 30-year-old real estate agent, was found murdered at a residence on the northeast side of Decatur. As the anniversary dates of their murders approach, law enforcement officials are hoping a large reward may bring forth information. Through an anonymous donor, a reward of $10,000 each is being offered for information provided to Crime Stoppers, the Macon County Sheriff’s Office or Decatur Police Department by Aug. 31, leading to arrests and formal charges in the Lewis and Witty murder investigations, Decatur police Lt. Jason Walker said Wednesday. Witty was killed the evening of Aug. 4, 2011. As he and his sister walked along Johns Avenue, just east of 22nd Street, two males approached them and demanded money. One of the males pistol-whipped Witty, who urged his sister to run toward her nearby home. As the gunman pointed the weapon toward his sister, Caleb stepped between the suspects and his sister. He was shot to death in the torso. Lewis’ body was found Aug. 5, 1994, after she was beaten and strangled in a vacant house on Finch Drive that she had an appointment to show. A break in the Witty case came earlier this year when police connected a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun to the Witty and Billy Rutherford murders. Decatur police detective David Pruitt testified May 1 that the gun, which was recovered during the investigation of the Aug. 29, 2011, murder of Rutherford, 24, was tied to evidence found at the Witty murder scene. Demeco Hill, Felton T. Estes and Shitavius J. Cook are awaiting trial on first-degree murder charges in the Rutherford slaying. Daniel C. Jones, who admitted to possessing the handgun linked to the Witty murder, is awaiting a Sept. 30 trial on charges of felony possession of a firearm with a prior conviction. No arrests have yet been made in the Witty or Lewis cases. Police ask those with information on the Witty case to contact Decatur police detectives at (217) 424-2734. Those with information on the Lewis case can contact sheriff’s detectives at (217) 424-1337. People can also contact Crime Stoppers at (217) 423-8477.
