Police are appealing for information after a robbery in Standish, Wigan. At about 8.40am on Thursday 12 September 2013, a security guard was at the Coop store on Preston Road, when he saw a man running towards his van. Anticipating that he was about to be robbed, the security man turned around and headed back to the store. The masked offender, who was carrying a sledgehammer, caught up with him at the door. Money was stolen but nobody was injured in the incident. The offender had an accomplice who was waiting in a blue Toyota Yaris which sped off. The car was found burnt out a short time later at Worthington Lakes. Both men were dressed in dark clothing and wearing balaclavas. Detective Inspector Martin Reddington said ‘Thankfully nobody was injured during this robbery, but we are working hard to try and find the men responsible.’ ‘We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this robbery to come forward, I would also like to hear from anyone who may have seen any vehicles parked on the car park with occupants hanging about rather than entering the store and we are also keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the car being burnt out.’ Anyone with any information is asked to call police on 0161 856 7124 or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
