Police arrest ‘strange fellows’ in Jigawa The police have confirmed arrest of some ‘strange’ looking people, who were seen hovering around schools and other vicinities in Jigawa State. Their arrest was effected during a response to reports making rounds in the week that some schools in the state were being shut by insurgents. Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in charge of Jigawa, Kano and Bauchi states, Kabiru Ringim, who confirmed this in an interview according to Sunday Independent, however refuted the report that about 30 primary and secondary schools were shut down by suspected members of Boko Haram terrorist group in Bolmo area of Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State. Speaking with Sunday Independent, Ringim said the report is baseless and should be regarded as a rumour. The PPRO said in the course of the false news out break, a joint task force team was dispatched to tour some areas including Gwaram in Jigawa and Darazo (a border town between Jigawa and Bauchi states). He said the team found no school was shut down as against the closure report, and that the areas were not experiencing any form of turmoil but calmness. The patrol team, however, arrested and whisked away some idlers, as the PPRO said the Police had received prior report that there were strangers loitering the area. “The whole thing was a rumour. When this story came up during the week, a Joint Task Force (JTF) team was sent to patrol the areas, Gwaram in Jigawa and Darazo a border town between Bauchi and Jigawa states. “The JTF during their patrol arrested some people, better described as strangers or malingerers. Also, no schools were closed down and the place is calm.”
