Police can use social media in a variety of ways: broadcasting public safety announcements, responding to tips and questions, sourcing cries for help or detecting emergencies, monitoring gangs or other organized crime activities, or surreptitiously surveilling suspects and persons of interest to collect evidence or even detect potential crime. Police may also post propaganda, violate the privacy of citizens or simply ignore social networks altogether. Each country, city and country is finding its own way online, with varying results.
