Police have charged the first person under the state’s new ‘one-punch’ legislation over the death of a man in Sydney’s west on the weekend. About 12.30am (Saturday 3 May 2014), emergency services attended Rupertswood Road after reports a man had been assaulted. Police will allege a 21-year-old man punched another man, also aged 21, in the face. The injured man fell to the ground and lost consciousness. He was taken to Westmead Hospital, where he died about 6pm on Sunday 4 May 2014. Today (Wednesday 7 May), the 21-year-old man appeared in Blacktown Local Court where he was charged with assault causing death. It is the first time the legislation has been used since being introduced by the state government earlier this year. The man has been remanded in custody and will next appear at Penrith Local Court on Friday 11 July. Police are urging anyone with information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://www1.police.nsw.gov.au/. Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. We remind people they should not report crime information via our Facebook and Twitter pages.
