Police officer shot and killed. Confirming what we know: The Birmingham Police Department confirms the shooting death of an officer in the Ensley area late Saturday night. We will not release the name of the fallen officer until we are certain that his family has been notified. As of this writing a search is ongoing for a suspect. The tragedy marks the first death of a police officer in Birmingham in almost 10 years. According to a web site linked to the Birmingham Police Department the officer who died Saturday night was the 50th killed in the city since 1900. Jeff Eliasoph
