Police officers in Blaenau Gwent are reminding residents to make sure their windows and doors are locked, to prevent them from becoming victims of burglary this Christmas. The warning comes after an increase in burglaries in the last week, with five reported burglaries and three attempted burglaries in areas including: Heol Onen, Heol Helig and Gurnos Estate in Brynmawr. The recent three burglaries took place when the occupants were asleep from approximately midnight to early hours of the morning. Items stolen include a Kindle fire, Apple Ipad, Apple Laptop and an Orion Laptop As well as burglaries, four vehicles have also been targeted overnight whilst parked at Market Square, Windsor Road, Queen Street and Windsor Road – two of these cars were left open with car valeting equipment and a wing mirror stolen. Blaenau Gwent Detective Sergeant Marc Gardner says: “I would urge home owners to think carefully about security when going to bed or leaving their property, even if it’s just for a short time. Far too many domestic burglaries occur where occupants have left windows open or doors unlocked. “Help yourself by making that extra check which could prevent you from losing cash, bank cards, televisions, computers, jewellery, car keys and your car. The chances of becoming of victim of crime in Gwent are rare, but residents need to remain vigilant. Please report any suspicious activity however big or small to us on 101.” Police are offering some simple steps to help make your property more secure: • Remember to close and secure all doors and windows at night and when you go out • Keep your front and back doors locked, even when you are at home during the day • If you have locked your door, take the keys out of the lock and put them somewhere safe and out of reach from doors or windows • Don’t leave expensive property in sight close to a window • Keep your car keys safe and out of sight • Close all curtains when you have the lights on at night • Shut and lock garden gates
