Police remain at the scene of a serious crash which closed southbound lanes for more than nine hours today on the state’s Mid North Coast. The crash happened about 10am today (Wednesday 28 August 2013) when a prime mover struck a tractor on the Pacific Highway at Rainbow Flat, 20km south of Taree. The driver of the tractor, a 25-year-old man from Willina, was thrown from his cabin on impact and sustained several fractures. He was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital where he is reported to be in a critical condition on life support. The prime movers and trailer ended up on the median strip, blocking part of the southbound lanes. The driver, a 37-year-old man from Concord West, was taken to Manning Base Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests. Traffic has been disrupted throughout the day with alternating flows in place. The Crash Investigation Unit is investigating. It is hoped one southbound lane will re-open about 9pm, but there will be reduced spend limits due to road surface damage. Police are urging anyone with information about this incident to call police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://www1.police.nsw.gov.au/. Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. We remind people they should not report crime information via our Facebook and Twitter pages.
