Police turn extortion centers (Road Blocks) into murder spots 04 November 2014 As the Renewal Team we express shock and deep sorrow at the murder of Mugove Manonge an omnibus driver at the hands of the police of over a ten dollar bribe. The Renewal Team together with the unsuspecting public has been alarmed by the proliferation of extortion centers under the guise of being road blocks. Our party is on record saying the executive should take responsibility and stop the madness of turning this nation into a police state. The police are now publicly swindling the unsuspecting public of their hard earned cash in an economy that is shambles making it difficult for the poor to earn a dollar. The tragic reality in Zimbabwe is that traffic offenses have been turned into capital offenses where motoring citizens are held at ransom until they bleed some cash, and even executed without a trial. Citizens are entitled to protection by the state and the police is part of the state shockingly they are now the perpetrators killing unsuspecting commuter operators who are desperate to earn a living. The traffic games played by the police including in the central business districts of the major city centers have resulted in many accidents some of them claiming lives including innocent children. As the Renewal Team we unreservedly condemn the killing of the innocent driver, and our anger falls directly to the Officer Commanding Traffic Department ,the orders he has given his Traffic Department have been the major cause of many deaths in the country shockingly we have not had a statement from him over the actions of his department. We accordingly call for 1. The setting up of a commission of inquiry into all the deaths related to roadblocks 2. We call for the immediate resignation of the Senior Assistant Commissioner in-charge of the police traffic department if he does not resign his immediate suspension. 3. We call for immediate retraining of all police officers in the Rule of Law and rights of citizens as enshrined in the new constitution. 4. We call upon the human rights commission to launch an investigation into the extortion centers being run the police 5. We call upon Parliament to restore the rule of law on the roads and abolish the extortionist spot fines which are unjustifiable in a democratic society. Our condolences go to the family of Mugove Manonge and all those who tragically passed away in the ugly accidents caused by the lack of respect of the rule of law by police officers. Instead of upholding the law they have been turned into a vicious money collecting barons. This cannot continue to be tolerated in an independent Zimbabwe. MDC renewal Team – The courage to be different.
