Policemen on way to arrest Hurriyat activists ‘thrashed’, vehicle torched: Srinagar, April 04: (GNS) A group of policemen were allegedly thrashed by locals and their vehicle was attacked with stones in north Kashmir’s Hajan after they went to arrest a leader of Syed Ali Geelani’s group, Threek-e-Hurriyat. Witnesses said a police team in civvies went to Syed Mohalla in the town that witnessed a youth’s killing last month, to arrest Abdul Hameed, who is Tehsil president of the Geelan’s group, but had to retreat after facing stiff resistance from locals. “As soon as they reached the area and tried to arrest Hameed, youth as well as women came out of their houses and chased the policemen away,” a witness said. Two from the team of four policemen were thrashed by youth who also damaged their car. “They also pelted stones at their vehicle,” the witness told GNS. “Due to people’s resistance, policemen had to leave the spot without their vehicle,” he added. A police officer in the area confirmed that a team had gone to arrest Hameed. He, however, denied that policemen were thrashed. “They couldn’t arrest him because unfortunately their car skidded into drain and they had to return,” he said. Later in the evening, angry youth torched the police vehicle which sources said belonged to a senior police officer.
