Polio Virus Found in World Cup Host City Portugal’s soccer team - TopicsExpress

Polio Virus Found in World Cup Host City Portugal’s soccer team could have more to worry about than a first-round knockout. The World Health Organization announced Monday that Brazilian officials have discovered strains of the polio virus in one of the World Cup host cities, Campinas, which is a base camp for the Portuguese and Nigerian teams. The virus was found in sewage at Viracopos International Airport and reported to WHO on June 18. It closely matches a strain recently found in Equatorial Guinea, but health officials say the “risk of further international spread of this virus from Brazil is very low.” In part, that is because the vaccination rate in the country is greater than 95 percent.
