Polish people celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve, so its our Christmas today. I braced myself & went to see a 94 year old family member who now resides at a tiny Polish care home. They all have some form of dementia and the youngest is a mere 84. Mariusz (92) falls asleep all the time and then shouts, Helenka (84) thinks shes an 18 year old accountant and getting married to our Stan, Stan (94) doesnt know hes getting married, chews all the time and likes Polish fudge cows and Władzia (86) is a fidget, speaks both Polish and English fluently but hides tissues everywhere. We heard of another guest (90, but now deceased), who would hide chips in his pants and another who would tell the care ladies that they are very ugly. We laughed so much I nearly weed myself. I stayed for the special dinner, had asti spumante, the food of my childhood, including poppy seed cake which always sends me to sleep and listened to a tape of Polish Christmas carols sung by a Polish monks choir (not recommended). The most worthwhile evening Ive spent for a while. A reminder. Were all just human and time takes no prisoners. Roll on 2015, how those years do fly.
