“Politics is the art of the possible, and let me draw a line - TopicsExpress

“Politics is the art of the possible, and let me draw a line between the possible and the impossible - The central authority has said clearly that it will not retract the decision.” Leung Chun-ying, Hong Kongs current chief executive, has said he wants to meet with student protesters but he has already stated that the key demands - his resignation and the right for the people to nominate their own candidates - are off the table. The Chinese authority is not backing down from their insistence that Beijing have a role in the election and they included the ominous demand that all candidates must love China. Meanwhile, conflict around the Protest sites has only gotten worse - the Chinese government recently shut down access to the BBC after a video went viral of the police repeatedly kicking a handcuffed protester. The police have destroyed barricades with sledgehammers and buzz saws but new barricades have been erected in new locations. Chief Executive Leung has stated efforts to restore order will continue even as discussions with student protesters take place. To which protesters respond “That is why people here want genuine democracy — not that they want to confront Beijing, but they want a government that represents Hong Kong’s interests to Beijing.”
