Pomp and Circumstance is the title of a series of marches for orchestra composed by Sir Edward Elgar: March n. 1 in D major (1901), March n. 2 in A minor (1901), March n. 3 in C minor (1904), March n. 4 in G major (1907), March n. 5 in C major (1930) and March n. 6 (only sketched and then elaborated and drawn up by the English composer Anthony Payne in 2006) The first five marches were published by Boosey & Co. with the title of Elgars Op. 39 and each of those was dedicated to a friend of Elgar. The first march - in particular the Trio - is the most famous: in the Stati Uniti dAmerica, its traditionally played at colleges and high schools during the handover ceremony of certificates or diplomas; in the Regno Unito is a patriotic song, sung to words by Arthur Christopher Benson with the title of Land of Hope and Glory and is one of the hymns unofficial of England (it was for example the anthem of the Commonwealth Games Federation until 2006); in Italy it has become a religious song with the title of the Holy Church of God, used in some Catholic churches. This march is also well known in the world of professional wrestling, having been used by famous wrestlers such as R.I.P Macho Man Randy Savage - 1952-2011 and Gorgeous George as their entrance music in the ring before fighting. Pomp and Circumstance (March no. 1) was also used in the soundtrack of many films, including A Clockwork Orange by Stanley Kubrick Films and the animated feature film from Walt Disney Studios Fantasia 2000 with Donald Duck, in a Fanboy & Chum Chums cartoon and in a episode of SpongeBob SquarePants in wich Mrs. Puff presents its nautical school accompanied by the Trio of March number 1. Frank Zappa used the melody of the theme of Pomp and Circumstance to build a very short fragment of his suite Billy Mountain. in this case its performed by the Italian Arma dei Carabinieri Band during the concert in Todi of July 24, 2014.
