Ponder Anew Update October 2014 Vision To be a catalyst for healing and reintegration for veterans of all ages within their families and communities; to raise awareness in all audiences of what we ask from those who serve. Mission Through performances of the highest artistic quality, post-show discussions, and creative workshops, to honor our veterans and to help our communities process the social and cultural effects of war with integrity, in an honest and responsible manner. Recent performances Yes, it has been awhile since our last Update. Life intervened, but we had a run of wonderful performances in spring and early summer, starting with the one to celebrate Carol’s 60th birthday at Bongo After Hours Theatre in Nashville on April 27th – thank you for helping us mark this passage. During May and June we did ten performances and one workshop in partnership with Courage Beyond at Centerstone (couragebeyond.org), an organization dedicated to helping veterans and their families who are affected by PTS. In July and September we had several performances in three states. A full list of venues and dates is included at the end of this email. You may be surprised at the number and the variety of venues! Upcoming Performances - For details, please go to carolandrobert/calendar/ Monday, November 3rd Alvin C. York Veterans Administration Campus, Murfreesboro, TN – FREE Sunday, November 9th First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Nashville, TN - Donations Tuesday, November 11th Nashville Veterans Administration Center, Nashville, TN - FREE Thursday, November 13th Warren County Old Courthouse, Lebanon, OH – sponsored by The Heroes’ Fund Friday, November 14th Prince of Peace Church, Cincinnati, OH – sponsored by The Heroes’ Fund Saturday, November 15th 7th Annual Heroes’ Fund Celebration, Dinner and Dance, West Chester, OH Sunday, November 23rd Grace Church of the Nazarene, Clarksville, TN - Donations A note on “PTS” vs. “PTSD” We have heard from several people, both veterans and those in active service, that they are trying to eliminate the “Disorder” from “Post Traumatic Stress.” The idea of being labeled as having a “disorder” is insulting and noxious to them. We have heard both PTS and PTSS (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome) offered as alternatives. As a veteran, veteran’s family member, or civilian - what do you think? Free performances for veterans In December of 2013, we raised funds through RocketHub and Fractured Atlas - $5,000 for ten free shows for veterans. We successfully raised the money, but had to reschedule performances after Robert’s spring dance with cancer. All ten shows now have been scheduled, with several performances accomplished. We are especially excited to be working with Room in the Inn in Nashville, a campus for the homeless, as part of their new veterans program; and for upcoming shows at the Nashville and Murfreesboro VA Hospitals. Thanks again to all of you who make these free performances for veterans possible! We need an agent… …someone to help us book engagements for Ponder Anew. If you have experience in marketing or booking performing artists or speakers – or know you could learn - and have some savvy in social media, we need your help. Someone is going to make money booking this show. Is that you or a friend of yours? We have many of the tools in place: We need the right person to help us DO it. Please tell everyone you know that we’re looking for that person! Thank you!! Ponder Anew, the Published Memoir – What a terrific Holiday Gift!!! This book is my father’s memoir in its entirety with a scholarly forward by Dr. Howard Davis Grier, an introduction Carol wrote, and some wonderful never-before-published pictures, including views from Eagles Nest, Hitler’s hideout. This book is for anyone interested in history, PTS – or a beautifully-written, thumping-good story. It is available for sale by ordering online at most major bookstores – and, of course, at Amazon (amazon/Ponder-Anew-What-Almighty-Can/dp/1628800046). Could those of you who have read the book please go to Amazon and write a review? This is important as a way to help people find their way to the book online. Many thanks! What’s in a name? Evidently quite a lot! Earlier this year, several of you engaged in our conversation about possibly changing the name of the show to something more recognizable and marketable. We received impassioned opinions – and it was split, about 50/50 – about changing it for marketing purposes or to keep it as is. Those who were in favor of changing it had as much trouble as we did in coming up with something better – and we greatly appreciate all the thought and work that went into the suggestions. We did vet possibilities through our military counseling contacts and they (and their clients) vetoed several. It’s not easy to address multiple “target” audiences – people in and associated with the military; theater folks; arts-in-education folks; and – of course – our general public, which is a highly eclectic, multi-generational, multi-demographic audience. So, for now, we are keeping Ponder Anew: A WWII Warrior’s Story. We are hoping that “Ponder Anew” becomes a household phrase. We take heart from the fact that individual artists don’t have instant name recognition when they start out and everybody knows who Garrison Keillor is – so, please, help us spread the word. Vision and Mission We also have reworked our vision and mission statements (above), based on the evolution of the performance and our relationships with our audiences. We would welcome your feedback. Spreading the Word As always, if you know of a venue – traditional theatrical venue or non-traditional venue where Ponder Anew would be welcome – please let us know by emailing carol@carolandrobert, calling 615-227-3876, or posting at https://facebook/PonderAnewAWWIIWarriorsStory. We would appreciate “likes” on Facebook and the forwarding of these Updates to your friends who might be interested. Again, many thanks. Another way to support Ponder Anew To help us continue to provide FREE FOR VETERANS performances and workshops, you may make a tax deductible donation through Fractured Atlas, our fiscal sponsor. Secure online donations by credit card may be made at: https://fracturedatlas.org/site/fiscal/profile?id=6582. Contributions by check for the purposes of Ponder Anew must be made payable to “Fractured Atlas” (with Ponder Anew in the memo line) and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. Mail checks to PO Box 68226, Nashville, TN 37206. Remember: Ponder Anew isn’t just about World War II. It’s beautiful storytelling with music about going to war and coming home again. It’s about PTS and other unseen wounds of war, a bridge to understanding for all audiences. This mailing list: Please know that we want to respect your privacy and your wishes.
