Pop Icons: Who would be considered a lesbian icon? Ill be the first to admit that Im not an expert on LGBT history. Despite my ignorance, Ive noticed a few lesbians who have made great strides for LGBT awareness in the public eye. Not all of them are activists, but they, merely by being open, have demanded equal treatment. Unfortunately, my list will be biased towards the celebrities. A few are: Ellen DeGeneres - one of the most famous lesbians today. She proved that lebsians are just as marketable as any other woman. 20 years ago, who would have imagined a lesbian starring in makeup ads? Portia DeRossi - any wife of Ellen is an icon in my book. Plus, she shatters the stereotype that lesbians are butch ladies who wear flannel. Martina Navratilova - in addition to being a bad-ass tennis-player, shes a bad-ass lesbian. Shes involved in various charities and LGBT activism. K.D. Lang - I couldnt think of lesbians in the 90s without thinking of her. Rachel Maddow - how can you not love the first openly gay news anchor? Rosie ODonnell - one of the first lesbians to show that you can be famous, marketable and a lesbian! Of course, theres many more!##
