Pope in Tacloban: ‘Jesus is always with us’ TACLOBAN City, Jan. 17, 2015 — Jesus nailed to the Cross has experienced our condition, even before we experience catastrophes and is always with us. This was the main message of the Holy Father to the attendees of the papal Mass held earlier this morning, Jan. 17 at the Tacloban Airport. “He is Lord, capable of crying with us. He is Lord capable of walking with us,” said Pope Francis, who had asked permission from the people to speak in Spanish, relying on an interpreter. According to the Holy Father, Jesus always goes before each one, passing through all experiences ahead of us. One with us “Jesus nailed to the Cross and from there He does not let us down. He experienced all [the] calamities we experienced,” he added. According to our pontiff, it is Jesus who became one with everyone, assuring each one of His presence. Jesus is on the Cross and is therefore, capable of understanding human beings’ weaknesses, Pope Francis explained. “Jesus as high priest is capable of sympathy with our weaknesses, similarly tested in every way yet without sin,” the pontiff said. Papal Mass attendees were teary-eyed during the homily, several of whom stayed overnight at the airport despite rain. ‘I had to be here’ Super typhoon Yolanda, said to be the strongest typhoon to hit the country in 2013, battered the Visayas on Nov. 8, 2013, killing thousands, destroying property and rendering many homeless and jobless. Despite the delay in his coming to Tacloban, the head of over a billion Catholics said: “I felt that I have to be here. I’m here to be with you.” “Many brothers in moment of catastrophe came to help you because of this, we feel more as brothers and sisters because we help each other,” the Holy Father said. He also assured all present that the Blessed Virgin is always with her children as well. “Beside the Cross is Mother. We are like this little child just there in a moment when we no longer understand anything; all we can do…[is to] say ‘Mom’ as a child does to a Mother,” he said. The Holy Father ended with a final message of hope, saying: “This comes from my heart, please know Jesus never lets you down. The power of Jesus’ love for [us] and with that Cross let us move forward. Let us move forward, always forward.”
