Porto Alegre, the capital of the state Rio Grande do Sul, is the largest city in Southern Brazil. It is situated on the banks of the Guaiba lake, where five rivers converge to form a giant lagoon, Lagoa dos Patos. The city was founded in 1742 by Portuguese immigrants and since the nineteenth century it has been influenced by the new-comers from Germany, Italy and Poland. People from Porto Alegre are known as "gauchos", their typical dish is the churrasco (roast meat) and the traditional drink is chimarrao. Porto Alegre is one of the most visited cities of Brazil.
